WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

OCC def. Golden West

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sophomore outside hitter Poe Gantt had 14 kills and 14 digs to help lead the Pirates to a big 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 Orange Empire Conference sweep Friday.

Sophomore middle blocker Briana Fields had 13 kills, sophomore Rachel Freeno had 14 digs and freshman setter Kimya Jafroudi contributed 37 assists for OCC (14-1, 8-1 in conference).

The Pirates avenged their only loss when they fell in four to the Rustlers Oct. 7.

OCC plays host to Cypress Wednesday at 6 p.m.

UC Davis def. UC Irvine

DAVIS — Kari Pestolesi had a match-high 22 kills for the No. 23-ranked Anteaters, who lost the Big West Conference match, 25-22, 17-25, 25-18, 25-22, Friday.

Juliane Piggott had nine kills, while Taryn Robertson added 45 assists, eight digs and seven kills for UCI (17-5, 7-3 in conference), who was unseated from atop the Big West standings.

COSTA MESA — Kayla Albin scored in the 30th minute for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Friday.

A loose ball in front of the Saddleback goal was possessed by Taryn Bales, who fed a pass to Albin and the freshman forward found the back of the net to give OCC a 1-0 lead.

OCC (12-4-1, 8-4-1 in conference) outshot the Gauchos, 22-4.

COSTA MESA — Omid Kazemi scored a goal for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Friday.

OCC (9-7-1, 6-3-1 in conference) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 54th minute when Dean Regis sent a well-played pass down to Denny Perdomo, who slipped a pass to Kazemi. From there, the freshman midfielder ripped a steep-angle shot off the IVC goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Pirates’ goalkeeper Zakre Silva notched nine saves, while IVC’s Kurt Bond had 11.
