SAN JOSE — The Newport Harbor High boys’ water polo team suffered an upset Saturday, as Mater Dei stunned the Sailors, 11-10, to win the championship of the Finis Memorial Cup at Bellarmine High.

Newport Harbor (21-4) had beaten the Monarchs, 7-5, in the Sailors’ pool Sept. 25. That was for third place in the South Coast Tournament. This one was for the title.

Blake Kelly and Farrel South scored two goals each to lead Newport Harbor to a 7-5 win over Back Bay rival Corona del Mar in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Zach Lucas had five steals and South contributed four steals. Goalie Chris Whitelegge had 16 saves.

Finis Memorial Cup

SAN JOSE — Max Bergeson had five goals, seven steals and two assists to lead Corona del Mar High to a 16-11 win over Coronado in the third-place match Saturday.

Chase Watson and Emery Molnar scored three goals each for the Sea Kings (20-5). Isle Anderson had six saves, while Bruce Bearer recorded four saves for CdM.

In the Sea Kings’ 7-5 loss to Newport Harbor in the semifinals, Bergeson led CdM with two goals. Bearer had eight saves.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor High fell, 25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-15, to La Costa Canyon in the third-place match Saturday.

Kirby Burnham had 19 kills for the Sailors, while Cinnamon Sary had 52 assists.

Dos Pueblos beat the Tars, 25-13, 26-24, 25-14, earlier Saturday, behind 35 assists from Sary.

Burnham (10 kills), Maddy Brown (nine) and Katey Thompson (seven) were Sary’s top targets.

Kelly Heenan had 18 combined digs in the two matches.

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA, will play host to Marina Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.

Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Corona del Mar High senior setter Madie Smith was named to the all-tournament team after leading the Sea Kings to a fifth-place finish Saturday.

Smith recorded 40 assists and seven digs in CdM’s 25-19, 25-21, 25-14 win over Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood. Hailey Senske led the Sea Kings (20-4) with 11 kills. Morgan Boukather and Sydney Brombal added three service aces each and Amanda Nickel had two blocks.

Senske had 12 kills in the Sea Kings’ 25-14, 25-23, 26-24 victory over Cathedral Catholic of San Diego. Smith had 33 assists and seven digs, while Boukather contributed four aces and three blocks.

Corona del Mar will play host to Beckman Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
