GLENDORA — Senior Claire Layton had a goal and an assist to pace visiting Newport Harbor High to a 2-0 victory over Glendora in the semifinals of the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions Wednesday at Glendora High.

The victory propels the Sailors (14-2-1) into today’s title game, at 4:30 p.m. at Edison High. Newport Harbor, the defending champion of the eight-team event that is the biggest prize for the sport that is not overseen by the CIF Southern Section.

The Sailors will meet either Huntington Beach or Fountain Valley.

Huntington Beach, champion of the Sunset League, handed the Tars their only loss of the season, though the two teams split their two meetings. Newport Harbor beat Fountain Valley in both of their contests.

Layton scored on an assist by senior Claire Ramser for the second goal Wednesday, after senior Lauren Chandler tipped in a short corner directed in front of the cage by senior Lauren Grupe.

Layton sent the ball in a cross late in the second half that Mary Yeager tapped in for the final tally.

Junior Sydney King made five saves to record the shutout, for which Coach Devon Kelly said was also made possible by the strong play of defenders.

Senior Zoie Wolfe, junior Madeline Storch and senior Lauren Rojas combined to fortify the defense in front of King.

“I’d say those three made about eight saves between them,” Kelly said of the defenders.
