HB powers into semis

The No. 1-seeded Huntington Beach High Oilers girls’ varsity field hockey team is cruising through the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions and has outscored opponents 15-0 in its last three games.

The Oilers recently earned a 7-0 win against the Bonita Bearcats at Cap Sheue Field in the opening round of the playoffs.

Huntington Beach was led by junior midfielder Corinne Clegg’s two goals and junior forward Jessica van Arsdale’s two assists against the Bearcats.

Senior forward Taryn Rescigno, senior midfielder Meagen Good, sophomore forward Lettie Guerrero, midfielder Claire Prestridge and senior forward Chelsey Finamore each scored a goal against the Bearcats.

Sophomore midfielder Ashlyn Pooler, Good and Prestridge also added an assist in the contest.

The Oilers played host Fountain Valley Barons at Cap Sheue Field Wednesday, in the Tournament of Champions semifinals.

Prior to the playoffs, the Oilers clinched the Sunset League championship (Southern Division) Thursday with a 1-0 win over Edison High.

The Chargers held the Oilers scoreless until two minutes into the second period when Rescigno scored the game’s only goal that was assisted by sophomore Lindsey Walter.

The Oilers finished the regular season 22-1, 9-1 in league, and have outscored opponents, 31-3, in league-play this year.

Goalkeeper Maelen Lockhard allowed only three goals in 10 league games and carried a three-game shutout-streak heading into Wednesday’s contest.

Before the Edison game, the Oilers defeated the Westminster High Lions, 7-0, Oct. 28 led by midfielder Claire Prestridge’s two goals and two assists.

Rescigno, Van Arsdale and midfielder Corinne Clegg had one goal and Clegg and Pooler added an assist in the contest.

If the Oilers defeated the Barons Wednesday, Huntington Beach will play in the Tournament of Champions final today at Edison High, starting at 4:30 p.m.
