Sea Kings ready for CIF run

The Corona del Mar High girls’ tennis team held off University High to claim its 11th straight Pacific Coast League title. Now, the Sea Kings will try to keep another streak alive, as they begin the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs as the No. 4 seed.

Coach Brian Ricker’s squad (18-1), which won all eight of its league matches, is attempting to reach the Division I title match for the fourth straight year. The Sea Kings won the title in 2006 and lost in the final the last two seasons.

CdM, which will be at home for Thursday’s first round against an opponent to be determined, is among four Newport-Mesa schools competing in their respective division playoffs.

Newport Harbor (13-4), which repeated as Sunset League champion with a 9-1 league mark, welcomes Marlborough in a Division II first-round match Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Sage Hill (11-7), the runner-up in the Academy League, opens Division IV play at home in Thursday’s first round against an opponent to be determined.

Estancia, the No. 3 representative from the Orange Coast League, plays host to Moorpark today in a wild-card match, from which the winner will advance to meet CdM.

The Sea Kings are paced by seniors Melissa Matsuoka and Hailey Hogan, who won their second league doubles title last week.

Newport Harbor sophomores Christina Young and Ricki Archie, who lost in the league doubles final, pace Coach Kristen Case’s Sailors.

Sage Hill, which meets the winner of today’s wild-card match between La Salle and Norwalk in Thursday’s first round at the Tennis Club, are paced by Dominuque Moore and Liana Korder, who finished third in the Academy League doubles tourney.

The Lightning are coached by A.G. Longoria.

Estancia, coach Rachel de los Santos, will rely upon senior singles standout Kendra Fisher and its top doubles tandem of Erin O’Neil, a sophomore, and senior Misha Brown.

If victorious Thursday, CdM would face either Northwood or Sunny Hills in the second round.

Newport Harbor, should it win Thursday, would meet either Arcadia or San Marcos in the second round.

Sage Hill’s likely second-round foe is Del Rio League champion La Serna.

The second round in all divisions is set for Saturday. The quarterfinals are Nov. 17, the semi Nov. 19, and the finals Nov. 23 at the Claremont Club.
