IRS wants to deliver refunds

The Internal Revenue Service says it owes nearly 1,400 Orange County residents, including 105 people last known to be living in Newport-Mesa, a total of more than $1.3 million in undeliverable tax refund checks. The IRS is asking them to come forward to claim those refunds; the $1.3 million payout in refunds breaks down to an average check of $948.

Every year, the IRS mails out tax refunds that, for the most part, reach their rightful owner. But a small amount, less than a third of 1% of refund checks sent out this year, were returned to the IRS as undeliverable, said Raphael Tulino, a spokesman for the IRS in San Diego.

“The main issue is a change of address,” he said. “We need a correct address from these taxpayers.”

Nationally, the government is looking to return $124 million worth of refunds to 107,831 people. About 13% of that, or $16 million, is headed to more than 15,000 Californians.

All a taxpayer has to do to claim their check is contact the IRS at IRS.gov and update his or her address under the “Where’s my refund?” tool.

Some taxpayers are due more than one check, IRS officials said in a news release.
