COSTA MESA — The Vanguard University women’s soccer team defeated visiting Point Loma Nazarene Friday in the championship game of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament.

Two regulation halves and two overtime periods ended without a goal, but Vanguard (12-1-6) posted a 3-1 edge in penalty kicks to earn the conference’s automatic berth in the NAIA Tournament for the first time in Vanguard history.

Senior goalkeeper Jillian Foss made saves on three of four penalty-kick attempts after overtime to help the Lions cause. She had three saves before the shootout to post her 10th shutout of the season.

Karri Currier, Ivana Mendez and Kathleen McDonald scored in the shootout for the winners.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 82, La Verne 53

IRVINE — Senior guard Michael Hunter led four Anteaters in double figures with 14 points in the nonconference season opener Friday at the Bren Events Center.

Junior guard Darren Moore and junior forward Pavol Loshonsky had 12 points apiece for UCI, for which sophomore Eric Wise had 10.

The five UCI starters made 17 of 27 field-goal attempts (63%) to lead the way.

Vanguard 117, Bethany 36

COSTA MESA — The host Lions made 24 of 50 three-point attempts to roll in their nonconference season opener Friday.

Diana Neves was 10 of 16 from threedom on her way to 40 points, while Rachel Copeland made five three-pointers to finish with 19 points. Neves added 10 rebounds and six assists, while point guard Sarah Boyd had 11 assists.

SANTA BARBARA — The Pirates opened their season in the first found of the Santa Barbara Tournament Friday.

Freshman Alyssa Hanson led the Pirates with 11 points, while Jenna Lujan had 10 for the winners at Santa Barbara City College.

OCC meets Antelope Valley in today’s semifinals at 5 p.m.

IRVINE — Junior transfer Jade Smith-Williams had 15 points in her Division I debut to lead the host Anteaters in the nonconference season opener for both teams Friday at the Bren Events Center.

Smith-Williams added six assists for UCI, which forced 26 turnovers, but shot just 25.9% from the field (15 of 58).

Freshman Lauren Spinazze had 11 points off the bench.

Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON — Junior outside hitter Kari Pestolesi led the Anteaters with 13 kills in the 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 Big West Conference road win Friday.

Junior Juliane Piggott added 11 kills for UCI (20-6, 9-4 in conference), which received 30 assists from senior setter Taryn Robertson.

Pestolesi had 21 digs and freshman libero Kristen Winkler had 23 for UCI.

Orange Coast def. Fullerton

COSTA MESA — Sophomore libero Nikki Osuna had 42 digs to highlight the host Pirates’ 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18 Orange Empire Conference win Friday.

Sophomore Briana Fields had 18 kills and freshman Poerava Gantt added 17, as Kimya Jafroudi had 51 assists.

OCC improved to 17-2, 11-2 in conference.

PASADENA — The Pirates’ season came to and end in the first round of the Southern California Regional Tournament Friday.
