WHITTIER — The Sage Hill School girls’ tennis team is no stranger to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

The Lightning have reached that level every season since the school opened in 2000. They did it again Saturday.

Sage Hill won on the road, defeating La Serna of Whittier, 13-5, in Division IV. The Lightning will face North Torrance, a wild-card entry who has knocked off Yucca Valley and Quartz Hill, Tuesday. North Torrance won the pre-match coin flip and will play host to Sage Hill, which finished second in the Academy League.

The No. 2 doubles team of Devyn Billingsley and Casey Astorino swept, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 to highlight the action for the Lightning (19-7).

For the second straight match, Julia Blakeley won twice at No. 1 singles before being pulled. Dominique Moore, Liana Korber, Katie Bick, Rian Billingsley and Ava Soleimany all won twice before they were replaced by subsitutes.

Abby Wesley and Kendall Steele each won once.

La Serna, the Del Rio League champion, ended its season at 14-8.

Sea Kings advance

CORONA DEL MAR — The Corona del Mar High girls’ tennis team swept in singles on its way to a 17-1 win over Northwood in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Melissa Matsuoka, the Sea Kings’ No. 1 singles player won, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.

Hailey Hogan swept at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Nini Ugrelidze, a transfer from the Country of Georgia, won, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1.

Corona del Mar (20-1) dropped just one set in doubles.

The Sea Kings will play against California Academy of Math and Science Tuesday. CdM won the pre-match coin toss and will play host to CAMS, starting at 1:15 p.m.

CAMS defeated Peninsula, 11-7.

Newport eliminated

ARCADIA — The Newport Harbor High girls’ tennis team saw its season end after a 12-6 loss to Arcadia in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs Saturday.

The Sailors end their season at 15-5.
