Just for Kicks

Connor Morrill and Alex Murray, students at Corona del Mar High School, founded the Just for Kicks Club last year as freshmen. Originally the club’s goal was to collect gently used soccer cleats to donate to local underprivileged children. They visited soccer fields and passed out flyers, met with neighborhood coaches, and held a donation drive at school. As they began collecting soccer cleats, they also started receiving jerseys, basketballs, football cleats, baseball hats, string backpacks and even tricycles! Their goal changed to collecting gently used sports equipment to donate to underprivileged children of the world. By the end of the school year, they collected over 550 pieces of sports equipment!

Connor and Alex decided to work with Mariners Church’s Outreach program and donated all the items to their adopted village, Rojo Gomez, just east of Tijuana, Mexico. On October 17th, they joined volunteers at Rojo Gomez for both a medical and soccer clinic. They helped the children of this village select two of the donated items each for themselves and played soccer and basketball with them. They not only had fun, but were rewarded by seeing kids wearing Little League uniforms with a big smile on their face.

The club’s goal for this year is to donate over a 1500 pieces of sports equipment to another adopted village from Mariners Church, but this time in Africa. If you’d like to help, please visit www.justforkicksclub.com. And browse the pictures from the trip to Rojo Gomez!
