HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High alumni Nate Castillo and Colin McKibbin were part of the Golden West College men’s water polo team that won its second straight California Community College Athletic Assn. state title Saturday at Golden West.

Golden West topped Long Beach City College, 7-5, in the title game. Castillo scored two goals and also had two steals for Golden West (26-6), and was named MVP of the state tournament.

“It feels good,” said Castillo, a center. “It’s a lot harder to do the second time. We faced a lot of adversity, and Long Beach is a great opponent. They really battled hard but thank God this time we came out on top.”

Castillo and McKibbin were both part of last year’s state title team as well. Castillo was named Southern California MVP this season and McKibbin was also a first-team selection.

Golden West made it a sweep in the women’s state title match by topping Long Beach City College, 6-5. Long Beach had four Newport Harbor alums — goalie Chelsea Datt, Annie Savoji, Adrienne Taylor and Kimmy Morrison — on its team.

Taylor scored three goals in the final. Morrison, who was voted the Southern California MVP earlier this postseason, also had a goal.
