LONG BEACH — The Anteaters’ bid for the program’s first Big West Conference title was denied by the host 49ers, who prevailed, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10, Saturday at the Pyramid.

The loss dropped UCI to 22-7, 11-5 in conference, one game back of Long Beach in the final standings.

The 49ers (19-7) earn the conference’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

UCI junior Juliane Piggott had a career-high 27 kills, while junior Kari Pestolesi had 20 kills and 21 digs for the ’Eaters.

Senior Alexandra Filkins hit .478 with a season-best 13 kills, while senior Taryn Robertson had a season-high 63 assists and added 12 digs.

COSTA MESA — Junior Karri Currier converted a penalty kick in the 18th minute in the first round of the NAIA Tournament Saturday at Vanguard.

The win propels the Lions (13-1-6) into the second round Tuesday against Point Loma Nazarene in Decatur, Ala.

The remaining 16 teams will compete, beginning Monday, at the Recreation Complex. The quarterfinals are scheduled Wednesday, the semifinals Friday and the title game Saturday.

Vanguard, for which senior goalkeeper Jillian Foss has 11 shutouts this season, is 1-0-1 against Golden State Athletic Conference rival Point Loma this season.

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Diana Neves had 24 points to lead five Lions in double figures in the tournament game hosted by the University of Great Falls Saturday.

Neves made six of Vanguard’s 17 three-pointers.

Senior Bridgette Reyes had 16 points and 10 assists and earned tournament MVP honors with 33 points and 21 assists in two games.

Neves and Rachel Copeland were also all-tournament picks for Vanguard (4-0).

LOS ANGELES — The No. 7-ranked Anteaters finished their regular season 15-11, 3-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Saturday at No. 1 USC (22-1, 8-0).
