Here comes Santa Claus

Santa Claus is doing more than mall visits this year and heading to the homes of Surf City residents.

The city’s Community Services Department is taking appointments to have Santa Claus come to residents’ homes to visit with children for Christmas.

The last day to make reservations over the phone is Monday, but the Community Services Department will take reservations in person up to Dec. 5.

The visits don’t normally sell out, but the more popular times like weekends and evening do fill up, said Carrie Sparks, department office assistant.

The visit lasts 15 minutes, and the department gives parents some tips and tricks to make the visit more memorable. The city recommends putting a small bag of gifts outside, so it looks like Santa is bringing the kids presents, Sparks said.

For children who are shy or get upset when they see Santa, having him sit in a chair makes him appear smaller, and allowing him to have a conversation with the kids helps. The department also asks parents to help keep the fantasy alive by not allowing their children to pull on Santa’s beard.

The visit is $40 for each 15-minute session, and only five children per session is recommended. Reservations are available 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from Dec. 5 to 19.

For more information or to schedule a visit, call the Community Services Department at (714) 536-5486.
