SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Vanguard University closed out pool play with a 25-21, 25-14, 25-17 loss to Cal Baptist Thursday and was eliminated.

The Lions dropped all three matches in Pool B, including a 13-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-19 setback to Mobile of Alabama Wednesday at the Tyson Events Center.

Heather DeJongh, Kelsey Wirt and Newport Harbor High product Jamie Heenan all had nine kills apiece for the Lions Thursday.

Vanguard (17-15) made its second consecutive trip to the national tournament, having never been before the 2008 season.

Cal Baptist and Taylor of Indiana advance from the four-team Pool B to the single-elimination bracket tournament.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Samantha Hansen had 16 points and Amanda Deal added 15 for the Pirates in the first round of the eight-team San Luis Obispo Tournament Thursday at Cuesta College.

Jenna Lujan chipped in nine points for OCC (5-3), which will face Hancock in the semifinals today at 5:30 p.m.

IRVINE — Host UCI missed three free throws in the final 12 seconds in the nonconference game Thursday.

Rebecca Maessen made one of three foul shots with 12 seconds left to pull UCI within 61-59 and Mary Has missed the second of two foul shots with two seconds left that would have tied it.

Has, in her first game after coming knee surgery, had 13 points and was three for five from three-point range for the Anteaters (1-6).
