State championships
STOCKTON — Orange Coast College lost its first-round meeting with Sierra, then eliminated San Joaquin Delta in the loser’s bracket Friday to remain alive at the California Community College Athletic Assn. state championships at San Joaquin Delta College.
The Pirates (21-3), the No. 1 seed from Southern California in the eight-team, double-elimination event, will meet the loser of today’s morning match at 1 p.m. today. OCC will need to win twice today and at least twice Sunday to claim the program’s third state crown in five seasons.
Freshman setter Kimya Jafroudi had 64 assists in the 25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18 win over Delta. Poerava Gantt had 26 kills and Nikki Osuna had 20 digs.
Sierra won a 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 26-24 decision, despite 19 kills from Gantt. Osuna had 18 digs to set the school single-season record for digs. She has 473 heading into today.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Freshman Amanda Deal had 16 of her career-high 25 points in the second half to help the Pirates hold on in the semifinals of the Cuesta tournament Friday at Cuesta College.
Deal had five three-pointers to help the Pirates (6-3) advance to today’s 4 p.m. title game against an opponent to be determined.
Samantha Hansen added 11 points for the winners.
