McElroy qualifies for nationals

Edison High senior Matt McElroy placed fourth Saturday at the Foot Locker Cross-Country Championships West Regional at Mt. San Antonio College.

McElroy, who finished in 15:34, easily qualified for this weekend’s Foot Locker Cross-Country Championships National Finals at Balboa Park in San Diego.

“It was a really conservative race,” said McElroy, who finished second in the CIF State Division II race, of his West Regional performance. “I came through the first mile at 25th place. I knew all the guys ahead of me were from out of state and I let them do all the work the first mile.”

McElroy then moved up to third place before cruising with some friends to the finish line. The Foot Locker national finals pit the top 10 runners from the West, Northeast, South and Midwest Regional meets against each other.

“The goal is pretty much top 10, top five, and even give it all I’ve got to try to win it,” McElroy said. “I want to be up with the top guys.”

HB Water Polo offering sign-ups

The Huntington Beach Water Polo Club is offering sign-ups for its winter session, by going to www.hbwaterpolo.com and clicking on the Events tab.

The winter session lasts until Feb. 26 and players will be training at Huntington Beach High, Edison and Marina. Various programs are offered for boys and girls from 12 to 18, as well as 8/10-and-younger co-ed teams. Those new to the club are asked to sign up for the development (orange) group.
