Hit-and-run victim dies, police said

The Irvine man who was hit by a car as he rode his bike down Jamboree Road in Newport Beach on Wednesday has died.

Donald Murphy, 49, of Irvine, died at 11:55 a.m. Thursday at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, according to the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s office.

Police said Murphy was riding his bike north of Ford Road along the curb when Patricia Ann Izquieta, 37, of Riverside, drifted out of her lane toward the side of the street and hit Murphy.

While Murphy lay there injured, Izquieta kept driving, dragging Murphy’s bike with her, said Sgt. Evan Sailor.

Izquieta was arrested soon after and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.

She posted bail Thursday and was released from custody.

Alcohol did not appear to play a role in the crash, police said.
