Jamie Fowler, a Newport Beach resident, continues to break world records in Masters swimming competition.

He completed a brilliant performance at the Southern Pacific Masters Assn. Short-Course Meters Championships in Long Beach Dec. 4-6.

Competing among 650 swimmers — in what is being called the biggest Masters championship meet in history — Fowler led all record breakers with six marks in the men’s 50-54 age group.

Fowler, a former All-American at USC, broke the world record in the 50 backstroke in 28.37 seconds, nearly a second more than the previous record, 28.95.

He also broke world records in the 100 back in 1:00.38 (previous record: 1:01.48), 200 back in 2:11.84 (previous record: 2:13.05), 100 individual medley in 1:01.29 (previous record: 1:02.27), 200 IM in 2:13.40 (previous record: 2:14.53) and 400 IM in 4:51.57 (previous record: 4:55.50).

Fowler was a six-time All-American at USC who won the 1980 NCAA title in the 200-yard back.

Peters tops NAIA

Newport Harbor High product Kasey Peters, a senior quarterback at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont. will finish atop the NAIA in total offense per game .

Peters, who completed 383 of 588 passes for 4,160 yards in 2009, in which the Battlin’ Bears finished 209, 1-9 in the Frontier Conference. Peters threw 31 touchdown passes and only six interceptions.

With no statistical rivals close to him in the lone game left in the NAIA football season — the title clash Dec. 19 between Sioux Falls (S.D.) and Lindenwood (Mo.), Peters’ average of 403.5 yards per game of total offense will lead the nation.

In addition his 378.2 passing yards per game will rank second.

With Peters triggering RMC’s spread offense, the school will finish No. 4 in total offense per game (501.6 yards) and No. 2 in passing offense per game (378.6 yards).

Peters earned NAIA Player of the Week honors in mid-October and three times was named Frontier Conference Player of the Week in 2009.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder earned second-team all-conference honors as a junior, when he completed 245 of 394 passes for 2,606 yards and 21 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

The 2009 all-conference team has yet to be announced.

Ford remains red hot

Orange Coast College product Courtney Ford, now a senior guard at Mercer University in Macon, Ga., was named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week in women’s basketball for a third straight week Monday.

Ford posted her second triple-double of the season in a 98-69 conference win over Belmont on Dec. 5. She had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

In a 69-59 triumph over Lipscomb on Dec. 3, the 5-foot-8 standout had 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

OCC’s career scoring leader (1,416 points) is among just two Division I players to have multiple triple-doubles this season.

Heading into this week, Ford was averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds and led the conference in both assists and steals.

Dailey earns honor

After earning first-team All-Ivy League honors in her senior season with the Yale women’s volleyball team, Cat Dailey has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. with honorable mention in the All-Northeast Region Team voting. Dailey, a former Sage Hill School star who earned the same distinction in 2008, led the Ivy League this season with 4.04 kills per set.

“Cat is a phenomenal volleyball player,” Yale Coach Erin Appleman said in a release. “It’s great to see her recognized for her ability among such an accomplished group of student-athletes”.

Dailey, the unanimous 2008 Ivy League Player of the Year, was one of three unanimous selections to the All-Ivy First Team in 2009 after guiding the Bulldogs to a program-best 21-4 record. She was the only player in the Ancient Eight to rank in the top 10 in kills, hitting percentage and digs, swinging at a .266 clip with 3.55 digs and a league-best 4.04 kills per set. The Newport Beach native also led the league in aces with 0.37 per frame.

A history major, Dailey earned Academic All-Ivy and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District first-team honors in addition to her athletic achievements.
