Aliso holds off CdM

CORONA DEL MAR — Junior Carolina van der Velde had 15 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots, but the Corona del Mar High girls’ basketball team was bested, 46-39, by visiting Aliso Niguel in a nonleague contest Tuesday.

Junior Ellie Nadal added 11 points, including three three-pointers, and chipped in eight assists for the hosts (6-3).

CdM trailed, 23-17, at halftime, but pared the deficit to 34-33 at the end of three periods and led by one with three minutes to go, Coach Mark Decker said.

But the Wolverines made shots down the stretch to prevail.

“We had our chances and we were right there,” Decker said.

Dani Gallardo chipped in five points and Sam Coffman added four for CdM.

Aliso Niguel is 6-3.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Laguna Beach 28

WESTMINSTER — Junior guard Clayton Ragsdale finished with 23 points and four assists in the Sea Kings’ first-round game at the Westminster Tournament Tuesday.

Spencer Haly contributed eight points and six blocks.

Parker Stone had eight points and nine rebounds.

CdM (3-2) resumes tournament play against Trabuco Hills on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Estancia 2, Ocean View 0

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior Ally Wallace, who played the first half in goal, scored her first varsity goal at forward to cap the scoring in the nonleague game Tuesday at Ocean View High.

Wallace converted an assist from sophomore Heather Flores in the 73rd minute, after junior Erin O’Neil had put the Eagles (4-3-1) on top in the 60th minute with an assist by junior Alissa Schaefer.

Wallace had three saves in the first 40 minutes and Helena Secrest had two saves to preserve the shutout, the fourth of the season for the Eagles.

Estancia plays host to Huntington Beach Thursday at 3 p.m.

LAKE FOREST — Josie Jogwa converted an assist from Mary Yeager for the Sailors’ only goal in the nonleague contest Tuesday at El Toro High.

Newport Harbor (1-4-2) will visit St. Joseph of Lakewood Thursday.

Estancia 12, Saddleback 10

COSTA MESA — Junior utility player Kylie Carpenter had a season-high eight goals Tuesday, to lead the host Eagles to their first victory of the season.

Jessica Avelly contributed three goals for Estancia (1-4).

Danielle Ridge had four assists.

Corona del Mar 4, El Toro 3

CORONA DEL MAR — Margot Money scored two goals and Alex Musselman had seven saves to pace the Sea Kings in the nonleague home game Tuesday.

Money added a team-best five steals for CdM (3-2), which received single goals from Pippa Saunders and Victoria Kent, who also added four steals.

Maddie Schwartz paced CdM with two assists.
