Ex-Sailor honored
Newport Harbor High product Megan Munce, a sophomore women’s volleyball player at Texas Christian University, has been named Setter of the Year in the Mountain West Conference.
Munce, the 2007 Newport-Mesa Dream Team Player of the Year as a senior opposite, played her first season as a full-time starting setter for the Horned Frogs, who made the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
TCU, coached by former Corona del Mar High star Prentice Lewis (formerly Perkins), defeated Rice in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, before being eliminated by No. 2-seeded Texas to finish 27-7.
TCU’s win total was four better than the previous school record and it was 13-3 in conference, finishing second behind Colorado State.
Munce, who led Newport Harbor in kills as a senior and started as a defensive specialist last season at TCU, averaged 9.94 assists per set and led the Mountain West with 53 aces. She also collected 314 digs, ranking second on the team.
She was named All-West Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn., one of three players to establish a first for the program.
