Grieving family starts foundation

The family of C.J. Hubbard, the Newport Beach man who died after collapsing outside a Newport Beach restaurant early on Thanksgiving Day, has started a foundation in his name.

“It has been so hard to lose such an incredible brother and son, truly a light in all our lives. Although he will no longer be here, his goodness will live on through this foundation,” his sister, Jessica Johnson, wrote in an e-mail announcing the foundation’s launch.

Police said Hubbard, 27, was outside The Code restaurant in Newport Beach Nov. 26, when conflicting accounts say he was punched and collapsed unconscious, or just collapsed on his own. Family said that a blood vessel in his brain burst, and he was taken off life support the next evening.

Hundreds attended his memorial in Rancho Santa Margarita last week. Among them were friends from his old high school and college, where he was known for being funny, dependable and driven.

The foundation will offer scholarships to students who want to attend Santa Margarita Catholic High School or UCLA.

“He credited both schools for making him the person that he was, and we know that he would love to give other deserving students the same opportunity,” Johnson wrote.
