Jafroudi, Fields win state title with OCC

Huntington Beach High alumna Kimya Jafroudi, as well as Edison alum Briana Fields, was part of the Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team that won the state championship this season.

Jafroudi, a freshman setter, was named MVP of the state tournament for the Pirates (26-3), who defeated Cypress for the state championship Dec. 6 in Stockton. She had 292 assists in the tournament, pushing her season total to an OCC single-season record 1,027. Fields was a sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker for the Pirates. She led the Pirates this year with 278 kills.

Locals earn Sunset League honors

Edison seniors Taylor Knox, Hallie Carter and Allison McCoy, as well as Marina senior setter Lindsay Mangan and Fountain Valley senior outside Sanni Little, were named first-team All-Sunset League in voting by league coaches.

Knox was an opposite, Carter an outside hitter and McCoy a middle blocker for the Chargers, who finished third in league and advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

Second-team honorees included Marina senior middle blocker Chelsea Olsen and outside Madison Snow, as well as Edison junior outside Delaney McCraney and sophomore outside Cassie Strickland. Fountain Valley middle blocker Megan Saaseld was also a second-team honoree.

Newport Harbor, which won CIF and state titles, had senior middle blocker Katey Thompson as co-league MVP with Los Alamitos junior outside Jane Croson.

Perales is Sunset Coach of Year

Fountain Valley High boys’ water polo coach Eric Perales was named Sunset League Coach of the Year, and Perales’ Barons had seniors Loren Tengan and Nick Ingram as first-team All-Sunset League honorees.

Edison senior Ryan Martinazzi, as well as Marina senior Duncan Burrows, were also first-team honorees. Second-teamers included Fountain Valley senior Tony Frens, Edison junior John Mrcoh and Marina junior Jake Schnautz.

Fountain Valley juniors Nick Sterrenburg and Conor Bracken, along with Edison senior Max Lough and sophomore Brent Bazzell, were honorable-mention Sunset League.

Senior Blake Kelly, of league champion Newport Harbor, was named league Player of the Year.

HBHS holding baseball camp

Huntington Beach High baseball program, which reached the CIF Southern Section finals in 2009, is holding a youth baseball camp from Dec. 21-24.

The camp is for ages 9-14 and runs from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Cost is $125.

Williams repeats for Ocean View

Ocean View High senior Peyton Williams, who helped lead the Seahawks to an undefeated Golden West League campaign in girls’ volleyball, has been named the league MVP.

It was the second straight year that Williams, a setter, earned league MVP honors.

She was joined on the first team by senior teammates Alyssa Horiuchi and Kaycee Rogers, as well as juniors Vanessa Cardoza and Holland McNabb.

Seahawks junior Sarah Craig and freshman Madison Koci earned second-team honors.

Ocean View advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs before losing in five games to San Dimas.
