COSTA MESA — Going cold in the second half Saturday prevented the Orange Coast College women’s basketball team from playing in the championship game of its Coast Christmas Classic.

The Pirates (10-4) hit nine of 28 for 32.1% in the second half and lost to Canyons, 63-58, in the semifinals. They’ll play for third place against Cerritos today at 3 p.m. Canyons (6-4) will face Saddleback in the title game, scheduled for 5 p.m.

Freshman Samantha Hansen led the Pirates with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Jenna Lujan added 10 points. Freshman Michelle Yamasaki led the Pirates with five assists.

OCC shot 41.4% (12 for 29) in the first half to grab a 29-24 lead, as the Cougars were nine for 31 from the field (29%). But Canyons shot 13 for 32 in the second half (40.6%).

OCC led, 40-28, with just more than 14 minutes remaining. But a short time after that the Cougars used a 30-10 run to send the Pirates to the third-place game.

Joslynn Frazier led the Cougars with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Saddleback beat Cerritos, 80-73, to reach today’s final.

Vanguard 66, Cal State

COSTA MESA — Senior Greg Scott scored 22 points for the Lions in the nonconference game Saturday at the Pit.

Senior Mitch Boyce added 13 points and senior Dennis Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, scored 11 points for Vanguard.

The Lions built a 33-28 lead before halftime.

Billy Thompson led Vanguard with three steals to help the Lions cause 18 turnovers. Vanguard scored 24 points off turnovers.

The Lions’ bench also outscored Cal State Dominguez Hills’ reserves, 21-6.

James Cawthorne and John Staats scored 12 points each for the Toros.

Vanguard returns to action Tuesday when it will play at Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m.
