Five locals collect All-CIF accolades

Seniors Madie Smith and Lindsey Kish, who starred for Corona del Mar High and Sage Hill School, respectively, have earned repeat first-team All-CIF Southern Section honors in girls’ volleyball.

Smith, a setter, is joined on the Division II first team by junior teammate Morgan Boukather.

Kish, an outside hitter, has been recognized in Division IV.

Newport Harbor High senior Katey Thompson, who helped lead the Sailors to the CIF State Division I championship, as well as the Southern Section Division I-AA crown, is joined on the Division I first team by senior teammate Kirby Burnham.

Newport Harbor’s Dan Glenn is Division I Coach of the Year.

Smith, the Pacific Coast League Co-MVP, totaled an Orange County-best 1,098 assists, and finished with 254 digs, 182 kills, 23 service aces and 23 blocks. The four-year varsity performer will continue her career at the University of San Diego.

Kish averaged 3.2 kills, 4.5 digs and 1.1 aces per game for the Lightning (15-11), who advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division IV-AA playoffs.

Thompson, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, is bound for UC Santa Barbara. She amassed 418 kills, 22 blocks and 17 service aces. The 2008 Newport-Mesa Dream Team Player of the Year was a second-team All-CIF Division I honoree as a junior.

The USC-bound Burnham, a 6-2 outside hitter, led the Sailors with 476 kills. She also contributed 85 digs and 36 aces.

Thompson and Burnham helped the Sailors sweep Salinas in the Division I state title match at UC Irvine on Dec. 5.

Boukather, a 6-1 opposite, led the Sea Kings with 307 kills and finished with 58 digs, 55 aces, 48 blocks and 32 assists.

Smith and Boukather helped CdM (30-7) reach the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA championship match for the second straight season. The Sea Kings also advanced to the Southern California Regional final for a second straight year.

Glenn earned his fifth state crown in 24 seasons at Newport Harbor. Glenn, 50, also won his seventh section title as the Sailors (33-6) defeated Sunset League rival Los Alamitos in the championship match last month at Cypress College.
