Wet ‘N’ Wild with Rockin’ Fig:

‘Tis the day before Christmas, and I hope all is well, and we did get lucky with our pre-Christmas swell. As earlier in the week, we had overhead glassy surf at our Surf City beaches. There has been some hustle and bustle as shoppers are scurrying around Main Street to get the last of their shopping done. Of course, possibly the biggie on the list, the surfboard, is the hardest to hide, because of its size. And then it could be Christmas money for the groms, when parents are not quite sure of that perfect size, shape color or length.

The water has really chilled down the last few weeks, nothing like a new full-body suit, 4-mill thickness if you get really cold, and three-two thickness if you like faster paddling. I know that’s tops on my list.

And last-minute extras include board bags, tail pads and leashes. And don’t forget about upgrading to fiber glass fins, which come in different shapes and make a difference in how a board rides.

Ding kits are handy items that are useful gifts, and those new fancy waterproof watches are extremely cool-looking and good for timing heats, if you do contests. Bike racks are a great way to get that new surfboard to the beach on a killer beach cruiser, which come in so many different hot colors these days — red, green, black and even pink.

There are so many great DVDs out, including videos of your big-name surf pros shredding small and big waves, worldwide travelogues, surfing yoga and fitness programs, instructional films on how to build your own surfboard and more. Do not forget about Dr. Scott earplugs, which keep the water out and will lessen your chance of getting bony growth in your ears. We sell lots of those to young and old surfers alike.

If your feet get cold hanging on the beach, there’s nothing like Ugg boots with fleece lining to keep your toes warm. And if your feet are cold in the water, it’s rubber booty time. If you’re a hat collector like me, they make a fine low-priced gift, or, for the cold mornings, a beanie.

And if you need some clothes, they’ve been having the outside street fair Tuesday nights with tons of deals and lots of 50% off stuff for you bargain hunters. And last but not least, all surfers need wax, the stocking stuffer that lasts a long time.

With winter break happening, our local mountains will be going off. Big Bear, Snow Summit, Snow Valley and Mountain High all have anywhere from 1- to 3-foot base depths with packed powder conditions. The snow guns have been on when it’s cold enough, and they’ve been trying to open more terrain daily.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Over and out.
