Boswell breaks scoring record

You can’t beat the start of the Edison High boys’ basketball team.

But Kyle Boswell has been equally impressive throughout his four-year varsity career. On Tuesday night in a nonleague game against Calvary Chapel, he also broke a record.

The Chargers senior scored 28 points in the 64-51 win. He now has 1,585 points for his career, which is a school record, eclipsing the former mark of 1,580 set by Brandon Jesse.

The Chargers are 10-0 and have won their first two tournaments of the year. They captured the title at the Irvine World News/Gary Raya Classic on Saturday, posting a 69-63 win over Cajon of San Bernardino.

Boswell, a UC Santa Barbara commit, has been named MVP of both tournaments. He’s averaging more than 25 points per game and Edison has also been led by junior guard Dylan Garrity, averaging more than 17 points.

But Coach Rich Boyce also pointed to the contributions of players like senior center Ryan Walker, averaging about four blocks per game, and senior forward Ryan Smith holding down the rebounding. Senior guard Max Prendergast has also played well.

“I think we have a lot of seniors and senior leadership,” Boyce said. “It’s not like we’re blowing people away. [In the last tournament] we had a tough game in the second round, the semifinals and the final. We’re just making plays at the end.”

Boyce said some of the football players like Stanford commit Jordan Zumwalt and Jeff Trojan decided not to come out for hoops, but football quarterback Matt Viles and receiver Tyler Troya had their first practice with the team Monday.

The Chargers are ranked No. 23 in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Brethren Christian 66, Saddleback Valley Christian 52 (OT): Senior Austin Wenger had a team-high 20 points to lead the Warriors (7-3) to the nonleague win Tuesday at the Orange County North/South Challenge.

Godinez 50, Los Amigos 49: Daniel Olvera scored 17 points for the Lobos, who were edged in a Gardne Grove Tournament game Monday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Edison 62, Lynwood 46: Junior wing Bonnie Samuelson poured in 32 points to lead the Chargers in the consolation finals of the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions Tuesday in Phoenix, Ariz. Samuelson’s freshman sister, Karlie, scored 22 points and junior Christina Marquette added 16 rebounds for the Chargers (7-3). Bonnie Samuelson is averaging 29.5 points per game for Edison. She scored more than 30 in all four games at the Nike TOC.

Santa Margarita 51, Huntington Beach 49: Senior Meghan White scored a team-high 20 points for the Oilers in their final game of the Nike Tournament. Kelsey Minato added 16 points for Huntington (7-3).

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Fountain Valley 2, Peninsula 0: Paige Grigus and Brooke Lux each scored in the nonleague game Tuesday, and McKenna Henry made 12 saves for the Barons (7-1-1).

Edison 1, Orange Lutheran 0: Brianna Webster scored off Rachael Larson’s assist as the Chargers improved to 5-1-1 Tuesday.
