Golfers bound for UCI

Men’s golfers Allan Jun and Pete Fernandez have signed national letters of intent to play at UC Irvine, Anteaters Coach Paul Smolinski announced.

Jun, an Oceanside resident, is competing for El Camino High and is ranked No. 32 nationally in the Boys’ Golfweek rankings and No. 82 in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings.

He won the Future Champions Golf San Diego Junior Masters in July and the San Diego Junior Golf Assn. Paul Benoit Memorial in May. He also qualified for the USGA Junior Amateur in July.

Fernandez, from Bakersfield High, is ranked No. 146 on the Junior Golf Scoreboard and No. 169 by Golfweek.

He finished third in the SCPGA Junior Tour Toyota Cup at Santa Ana in July and was fourth in the California State Junior Amateur Championship in August.

Jun and Fernandez represented Southern California at the Boys’ Junior America’s Cup last summer.

OCC quartet honored

Orange Coast College freshman forward Jordan Gorman and sophomore midfielder Shun Katashima were first-team All-Orange Empire conference performers in men’s soccer.

Antonio Gonzales and Eddie Guillen represented the Pirates on the second team.

Gorman had six goals and nine assists for Coach Laird Hayes’ squad, which finished 8-10-3, 5-6-3 in conference, good for fourth place.

Katashima had two goals and four assists.

Gonzalez, a freshman midfielder out of Estancia High, had three goals and two assists.

Guillen, a sophomore defender, had one assist.
