IRVINE — The Anteaters hit .522 as a team in a 30-22, 30-22, 30-21 sweep of the nonconference season opener Tuesday at the Bren Events Center.
Sophomore opposite Carson Clark had 15 kills and hit .520, junior outside hitter Jordan DuFault had 14 kills and hit .778, and sophomore outside hitter Kevin Carroll had 12 kills and hit .500 for the reigning NCAA champions.
Junior Jeff Schmitz had 44 assists for UCI and matched DuFault with a team-high 10 digs.

FULLERTON — The visiting Lions, ranked No. 4 in NAIA Division I, needed overtime to prevail in the Golden State Athletic Conference contest Tuesday.
Senior guard Bridgette Reyes had 27 points and hit 10 of 14 field-goal attempts to pace five Lions in double figures.
Rachel Copeland (19 points), Sarah Boyd (16), Molly Pfohl (10) and Diana Neves (10) also helped the Lions improve to 7-1, 3-1 in conference.
Hope, which led, 34-33, at halftime, is now 4-9, 0-4.

FULLERTON — Greg Scott had 19 points to pace the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.
Scott was nine for 14 from the field, while Billy Thompson (16 points) was seven for nine for VU (3-7, 2-2 in conference).
Hope fell to 4-9, 0-4.
