COSTA MESA — Sophomore Heather Flores and a strong defense helped the Estancia girls’ soccer team open Orange Coast League play with a 1-0 victory over Calvary Chapel at Jim Scott Stadium Thursday.

Flores scored in the eighth minute off an assist from junior Jessica Lyon, as the Eagles (7-6-2, 1-0-0 in league) bounced back from Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Cypress.

Eagles senior goalie Ally Wallace had six saves in her shutout.

Estancia plays at Godinez Thursday at 3 p.m.

Sage Hill 1,

Oxford Academy 0

CYPRESS — Alexa Thomas scored in the 60th minute for the Lightning in the Academy League match Thursday.

Thomas followed up a shot on goal from Brenna Van Hoogenstyn. The Oxford keeper bobbled the ball and Thomas placed the ball in the back of the net with a solid shot.

Sophomore center midfielder Rannah Dabiri stood out for Sage Hill (6-6-2, 2-0-0 in league) with her passing. Senior stopper Megan Culberson won several balls and played well on defense.

Lightning freshman outside defender Campbell Moore also played great defense and shut down Oxford’s forwards effectively.

Goalie Hannah MacLoud had eight saves to help secure the shutout.

Sage Hill plays host to Whitney Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Newport Harbor 1,

Fountain Valley 0

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Junior Megan Khademi scored in the 50th minute for the Sailors in their Sunset League opener Thursday.

Junior Natalie Swift assisted on the goal. The Sailors (3-5-4, 1-0-0 in league) outshot Fountain Valley. Sophomore Emily Browne had five saves to record the shutout.

The Sailors will play at Esperanza Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Laguna Hills 2,

Corona del Mar 1 (OT)

LAGUNA HILLS — The Sea Kings allowed a goal with two minutes remaining in their Pacific Coast League opener Thursday.

Senior Hayley Raguse scored in the 60th minute to tie the score, 1-1. Senior Nikki Flinn assisted on the goal.

In the PCL, teams play two five-minute overtime periods after a tie at the end of regulation.

CdM (6-6-3, 0-0-1 in league) will play host to Irvine Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Estancia 48,

Calvary Chapel 24

COSTA MESA — Junior Kassie Stratton scored 25 points for the Eagles in their Orange Coast League opener at Estancia Thursday.

Junior Yesenia Maldonado added 14 points for the Eagles (8-10, 1-0 in league).

Estancia plays host to Trabuco Hills Saturday at 7 p.m.

Newport Harbor 57,

Fountain Valley 53

NEWPORT BEACH — Sophomore Kasey Thompson had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Sailors in their Sunset League opener Thursday night.

Sophomore Mandy Legault contributed 15 points and three steals for Newport Harbor (9-8, 1-0 in league). Junior Alex Morton finished with 13 points, 20 reobounds and four assists, while senior Coleen Mead added 11 points, six assists and five steals.

The Sailors play at Esperanza Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Corona del Mar 9,

Santa Margarita 3

CORONA DEL MAR — Claire Eadington and Ally McCormick scored two goals each for the Sea Kings in the nonleague match Thursday.

Margot Money contributed two steals and one goal. Goalie Alex Musselman recorded eight saves for CdM (7-4).

The Sea Kings will face Foothill Saturday at 11 a.m. at Beckman High in Irvine.
