Boilermakers edge NJB Trojans

Sunday’s National Junior Basketball action included a battle for second place, as the Huntington Beach boys’ Division 1 Boilermakers edged out the Division 1 Trojans, 42-30.

Both teams were short-handed but the Boilers, despite being down early in the first quarter, held the lead for most of the game and had enough gas left in the tank to hold off the relentless Trojan attack.

With their depleted roster, the Boilermakers had to get contributions from every player. Guard Jonathan Carlson led the Black and Gold with 11 points. Power forward Sasha Kaboli had his best game of the season by scoring 10 points. Point guard Gabriel Copper chipped in nine points and swingman Patrick Poss matched his team-leading total in assists by scoring eight points of his own.

Trojans center Stuart Morton led all scorers with 16 points and point guard Daniel Neff netted 10 points for the Cardinal and Gold.

White helps Boise State achieve perfection

Edison High graduate Hunter White contributed to Boise State’s season-ending 17-10 victory over TCU in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday night in Glendale, Ariz.

White, a sophomore for Boise State, rotated in at linebacker this year. He also served as the holder for the Broncos on Monday night following an injury to a teammate. Edison Coach Dave White said Hunter was named the Broncos’ Special Teams Player of the Year. He finished the season with 37 tackles and an interception.

Boise State finished 14-0 and won the Fiesta Bowl for the second time in four seasons. The Broncos were the second 14-0 team in major college football since 1900, joining Ohio State in 2002.
