Edison captures Trabuco Hills tourney

The surging Edison High boys’ soccer team won the Trabuco Hills Mustang Cup tournament Dec. 30, blanking Arroyo Grande, 2-0, in the final.

Chei Bajj had a goal and an assist for Edison (10-3-2). Mitch Alvarez added a goal and Garrett Moore had an assist. The Chargers had not given up a goal in five games headed into Wednesday’s Sunset League opener at Newport Harbor.

Marina Tournament: The longest running holiday boys’ soccer tournament in Orange County ended Dec. 30 as Los Alamitos won the title over Santa Ana, 2-1, in double overtime.

Fountain Valley placed fourth and Marina was fifth among the 24 teams entered.

Local all-tournament team members included Fountain Valley sophomore midfielder Wade Sias, Barons senior goalie Rafael Contreras-Geck, Marina senior defender Shane Johnson and Marina senior forwards Andrew Sullivan and Trevor Hatchard.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Edison fifth at Holiday Cup: The Chargers finished fifth at the prestigious tournament Dec. 30 and 31 in Newport Beach. They advanced to the quarterfinals before a tough loss to tournament champion Dos Pueblos, 8-5. But the Chargers rebounded for wins over Palos Verdes and Foothill by identical 9-4 scores.

Sophomore Alys Williams scored five goals against Foothill in the fifth-place match.

Edison opened league against Esperanza on Wednesday.

WRESTLING

Edison, Fountain Valley and Ocean View are the area teams competing at the Southern California Challenge, beginning Friday at Godinez High.

The Chargers finished seventh at the Blackhawk Invitational last week in La Quinta. Chris Bustos (140 pounds), Weston Hawkins (189) and Preston Irving (heavyweight) all finished third individually and Erick Zumwalt (135) was fourth.
