A Newport Beach woman pleaded not guilty Monday to fatally hitting a man with her car on Newport Boulevard last month.

Shana Lynn Calderon, 21, is charged with felony hit-and-run causing death, a misdemeanor DUI, driving with a blood-alcohol content above .08, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without a valid license. If convicted, she faces up to four years in prison.

About 1:30 a.m. Dec. 12, police said Calderon was turning right onto westbound 19th Street from Newport Boulevard. While she moved into the right-turn lane, 29-year-old Michael McLaughlin stepped into the street and got hit, officials said. He died from his injuries a week later.

After initially stopping and talking to witnesses, prosecutors claim Calderon and her passenger left. She turned herself in two hours later, still showing signs of intoxication, prosecutors claim. Police found a hollowed-out pen container that can carry prescription drugs in the car, officials said. Calderon is out on $100,000 bail and is due back in court for a pretrial Feb. 25.
