Police searching for female robbers

Police are looking for two women who robbed a man at knifepoint in Costa Mesa over the weekend, officials said Monday.

About 10:30 p.m. Saturday, a 56-year-old man was walking east on Victoria Street near Placentia Avenue when two 18-year-olds approached him, said Sgt. Phil Myers.

One of the women asked to use the man’s cell phone while the other walked around behind him, Myers said. When the man pulled out his phone for the first woman to use, the second put a knife to his back, he said.

The women took his phone and ran off, Myers said. The man was uninjured.

Myers said the incident was unusual because women are not typically suspects in robberies. Two weeks ago, police said three women violently robbed a teenage girl of her iPod in a Costa Mesa alley.
