Mike Moorhead, a sophomore at Corona del Mar High, shot three-over-par 147 to win the Toyota Tour Cup Championship, a prestigious junior tournament completed Sunday at Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont, Calif.

Moorhead carded six birdies in the 36-hole event to earn a one-shot advantage over runner-up Brian Campbell.

Moorhead, 16, who won the Pacific Coast League individual championship as a freshman last spring and was a first-team all-league performer for the league champion Sea Kings, was one-under through his last five holes to seal the victory.

It was his sixth win on the Southern California PGA Junior Tour since 2007.

“The conditions were pretty difficult [reported winds of up to 30 mph on Saturday], but I kept myself in it without making big numbers,” Moorhead said. “I putted well. I think my short game saved me.”

Moorhead was named Junior Golfer of the Week by GolfWeek magazine Monday.

He received a gold cup trophy for his first win in the Toyota junior tour, a Southern California circuit on which he has competed for three years.

“This is probably my biggest win,” he said.

Garcia plaudits grow

UC Irvine senior men’s soccer standout Irving Garcia is among 11 players named first-team MVPs by Soccer America, the equivalent of an All-American team.

It is the fifth time Garcia, the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year, has been recognized as an All-American in 2009, after leading the Anteaters to their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and their second consecutive Big West Conference Tournament crown.

A midfielder and a forward, Garcia led Big West players in points (25) and assists (nine) and was second in goals (eight).

He is a two-time first-team all-conference performer who also received All-American accolades as a junior.
