If you missed SOL Cocina’s last tequila dinner, you’re in luck. SOL is celebrating its first tequila dinner of the year at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Executive Chef Deborah Schneider just created a special menu of coastal Mexican cuisine to complement the flavors of Corzo Tequila.

First, a reception featuring a Corzo specialty margarita, and then a four-course dinner paired with handcrafted cocktails featuring Corzo silver, reposado and anejo tequilas. The premium tequila comes from Jalisco (Mexico’s primary agave growing region) and features twice the agave per liter than other premium tequilas. Space is limited, and $50 per person (plus tax and tip).

Tickets must be bought in advance by e-mailing Jennifer@SolCocina.com. Open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily; open for dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.; happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. daily, late-night menu from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday to Saturday; and weekend brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 251 E. Coast Hwy. in Newport Beach. More information may be found at (949) 675-9800 or www.solcocina.com.

Fish tacos

There’s another great fast-casual eatery in Costa Mesa: Baja Fish Tacos. It’s not a stranger to Orange County. The original and always crowded Baja Fish opened in Santa Ana more than a decade ago, with two others in Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel.

Its founder, Julio A. Gutierrez, incorporates family and friends’ recipes from throughout Mexico. Baja Fish Tacos makes fresh and tasty chicken tacos, carne asada tacos, blackened fish taco, grilled fish tacos and more.

They also have a great salsa bar (marinated onions are the best). OK, some say that the portions are small, but not really, especially the nachos, which are too generous. The two taco combo meal — most popular by far — comes with a choice of meat, white seasoned rice and your choice of black beans or pinto beans, which are favorites, for $7.60.

Locations and phone numbers include:

Big red key

SideDoor, an English-style gastropub, just opened at Five Crowns in Corona del Mar. It’s accessed through the Poppy Street entrance, now marked with a big red key. It’s an alternative to formal dining at Five Crowns.

You can stop by the casual SideDoor for seasonal small plates portioned for sharing, cheese and charcuterie, and world-class spirits. The menu changes daily on a whim by Executive Chef Dennis Brask and his crew. It can include roasted chioggia beets salad, gravlax with fennel and Meyer lemon, as well as butternut squash with wild nettle pesto.

Other items may include duck confit and Lawry’s famed prime rib sandwiches, and traditional British pub food like Cornish pasties and fish ‘n’ chips. The open charcuterie station cuts a selection of fine cheeses, cured meats, and pressed sandwiches to order. The gastropub is open 4:30 to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 4:30 to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, charcuterie service starting at 3:30 p.m. at 3801 E. Coast Hwy., Corona del Mar.
