Five Counties starts Friday
One of the top prep wresting tournaments in the nation, the Five Counties Invitational, will take place beginning Friday at Fountain Valley High.
According to the tournament’s site, this year’s incarnation includes 122 state qualifiers and 35 state placers from last year’s CIF State Meet.
Fountain Valley and Marina High are the local teams entered in the tournament. Wrestling starts at 11 a.m. Friday and continues all day, then starts again at 9 a.m. Saturday. The finals are scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Saturday. Poway is the defending team champion. Last year, Fountain Valley placed 37th out of 86 teams.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Edison 45, Marina 35: Junior Bonnie Samuelson had a game-high 17 points for the Chargers in the Sunset League game Tuesday night at Marina. Christina Marquette added 10 points and nine rebounds for Edison (13-4, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA poll.
Senior center Sloan Turner had 12 points for Marina (5-9, 0-2).
Fountain Valley 63, Los Alamitos 57: Sami Little had a game-high 20 points to lead the Barons (9-8, 1-1) to the Sunset League win Tuesday.
Ocean View 43, Westminster 17: Hannah Ferguson had 10 points to lead a balanced effort as the Seahawks (6-9, 1-0) easily won their Golden West League opener.
Huntington Beach 62, Trabuco Hills 19: Senior center Meghan White had 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Oilers (13-4, 2-0) in a Sea View League win Tuesday. Huntington Beach is ranked No. 8 in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA poll.
In previous league action, the Oilers topped Northwood, 50-32, in the league opener Friday night. Senior Merwa Azzizi had a game-high 15 points and a strong defensive effort and White added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Edison 2, Los Alamitos 1: Mitch Alvarez and Tyler Bigenho each scored in the closing minutes for the Chargers on Friday as they opened Sunset League play with a win. Edison is ranked No. 8 in the CIF Southern Section Division I poll.
Esperanza 4, Marina 1: Andrew Sullivan had the lone goal for the Vikings (6-2-6, 0-2) in their league opener.
Newport Harbor 1, Fountain Valley 0: Rafael Contreras-Geck had five saves, but the Barons fell in their league opener Friday.
Huntington Beach 5, Northwood 3: Jonathan Ayala, Osvaldo Dominguez, Thomas Harer, Jon McFall and Cameron Murphy all scored as the Oilers (3-4-2) took their Sea View League opener Friday.
