Prospective actors in Huntington Beach and its environs will have two opportunities to secure roles in theatrical productions over the next few weeks.

The Huntington Beach Playhouse, which opens its revival of the musical “Gypsy” tonight, has earmarked Jan. 24 and 25 as audition dates for its next show, the Ken Ludwig comedy “Leading Ladies.”

And Golden West College has scheduled tryouts for its leadoff production of 2010, David Auburn’s “Proof.” Tryouts are scheduled for Feb. 2 and 3.

“Leading Ladies” will be a real drag, at least for the two actors cast in the principal roles, director Gregory Cohen said. These performers will feel like Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in “Some Like It Hot” as they impersonate members of the opposite sex in a quest to snare an inheritance.

The tryouts will be in the Maddy Room at the Huntington Beach Central Library, 7111 Talbert Ave. Auditions are at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 and 7 p.m. Jan. 25 for five men and three women.

“Leading Ladies” will open March 19 and play through April 11. Additional information is available at www.hbph.com/auditions.htm.

A week later, Golden West College will be seeking a small cast — two men and two women — for the drama “Proof,” which won both the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize when it first hit the Broadway boards in 2001.

The play centers on a brilliant but depressed daughter of a world-famous mathematician whose mind left the world before he did — though he keeps returning in spirit.

Auditions will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 and 3 in the college’s Mainstage Theater. Technical crew members also are needed and should also attend on those dates to offer their services.

“Proof” will be presented March 19 to 28 under the direction of Tom Amen. Details may be obtained by visiting www.gwctheater.com.
