Staengel named coach

Bill Staengel has been named the boys’ and girls’ track and field coach at Costa Mesa High, the school’s boys’ athletic director Jim Kiefer announced Friday.

Staengel has been coaching throws for the track and field team at Santiago Canyon College. He also coached throws and assisted with soccer at Soka University.

He last worked as a head coach of track and field 20 years ago at Bishop Montgomery of Torrance for four years.

He takes over for Diane Bjelland, who said she resigned because she needed a full-time job for income.

Bjelland guided the girls’ team to four straight league titles in each of her seasons with the varsity team. Costa Mesa won a title in the Golden West League and has three straight in the Orange Coast League.

Kiefer also reports Jim Scott Stadium at Estancia High will be the site for the CIF Southern Section Division III track and field preliminaries.

Alumni game coming

John Emme is excited for a special event coming soon at Corona del Mar High.

The Sea Kings’ baseball coach is anticipating a big party atmosphere when the CdM alumni game takes place Feb. 20. He created a Facebook page for the CdM alumni and it has turned up great results, as several former players have committed to playing.

The alumni bash will begin with a barbecue at 11 a.m. The players will then take batting practice, which is optional. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.

The game will be between alumni from 1999 and before vs. 2000 to 2009.

For those interested in playing or attending, call Emme at (714) 271-4484.
