Kansas City rookie kicker Ryan Succop, a.k.a. Mr. Irrelevant XXXIV, earned the Mack Lee Hill Award, which is presented by the Chiefs.

The Chiefs players voted on the award winner. Succop will be honored and presented the award at the team’s 40th annual 101 Banquet March 6.

The Mack Lee Hill Award is presented each year to the Chiefs’ rookie or first-year player who best exemplifies the spirit of the late Mack Lee Hill, who passed away during his second season with the Chiefs in 1965.

Succop, who was roasted and toasted during Irrelevant Week parties in Newport Beach in June, made 25 of his 29 field-goal attempts (86%), tying for the best field-goal-make percentage by a rookie since the AFL-NFL merger (minimum 20 attempts).

He established a Chiefs rookie record with 25 made field goals, surpassing the previous mark of 21 established by Hall of Fame kicker Jan Stenerud in 1967. He also nailed all 29 of his PATs to lead the team with 104 points, the second-highest point total accumulated by a Kansas City rookie, and the highest point total by any NFL rookie in 2009. Succop hit all 17 of his field-goal attempts from inside 40 yards in 2009.

As the 256th and final selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, Succop became Mr. Irrelevant and then proved his effectiveness with K.C. He connected on a career-long 53-yard field goal in his NFL debut at Baltimore, Sept. 13, the longest kick by a Chiefs rookie since Stenerud hit a 54-yarder against Houston. He hit a career-high four field goals to help propel Kansas City to a 14-6 win at Washington Oct. 18. He also made three field goals in a 16-10 win at Oakland Nov. 15, including a 50-yard kick to give him a pair of field goals from 50 yards or more on the season, a figure topped by only Nick Lowery for Kansas City. Succop recorded a season-high 14 points in a 44-24 win at Denver, Jan. 3.

The Hickory, North Carolina native joined the Chiefs after a stellar collegiate career at the University of South Carolina.

He left South Carolina as the No. 2 all-time scorer in Gamecocks’ history with 251 career points.

Jones to appear at store

Michellie Jones, a triathlon world champion and an Olympic silver medalist, will make a special appearance at Bike Religion in Newport Beach Thursday.

The event, which includes store product giveaways and a greet and mingle with Jones, begins at 6 p.m.

Jones, referred to by many as the best triathlete, won the Ironman world championship in Kona, Hawaii in 2006.

She was an Olympic silver medalist in 2000.
