Cougars edge Hornets by three

Huntington Beach High played host Sunday to the National Junior Basketball Division 2 game between the Huntington Beach Hornets and the Huntington Beach Cougars. The Cougars ended up coming out on top, 37-34.

The Cougars led early and were up, 12-8, after a quarter and 17-12 at halftime. The Hornets pulled within a basket in the fourth quarter, and one point in the fifth quarter. But Kyle Privia made two clutch free-throws to hold on.

Justin Brodt added 14 points for the Cougars and Mark Schenkelvery scored 13.

“We played hard today,” Cougars Coach Mike Privia said. “Our team hung in there during the game. We stayed focused and played tough defense, and we are looking forward to our next match next Sunday at Huntington High School.”

National Junior Basketball

Santa Ana South 47, Fountain Valley Dukes 40: The Dukes played well in the Division 1 loss, getting off to a quick start and leading, 19-15, at halftime. But Santa Ana South’s full-court press proved difficult as it rallied for the win.

Brock Lundquist posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Dukes. Johnny McWhorter (11 points, five rebounds), Brandon Lynch (seven points) and Eamon Smythe (six points, three rebounds) also posted strong efforts.
