Rotary Club assists with Haiti relief

The Rotary Club Laguna Beach is teaming up with the community members to buy Shelter Boxes for earthquake survivors in Haiti, according to Rick Lang, club president.

Each Shelter Box contains a 10-person tent, a children’s pack, blankets, ground sheets, water purification kit, a basic tool kit, small stove, pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage containers.

More than 3,300 Shelter Boxes, enough to house 33,000 people, have been shipped and distributed in Haiti.

Shelter Boxes cost $1,000 and donations are sought to purchase them and ship them to Haiti.

Parade VIPs honored

The Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade Assn. will recognize its 2010 honorees at a special brunch, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at Tivoli Terrace, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.

Two join Friendship Shelter board

Two Laguna Beach residents, Jane Hanauer and Rebecca “Becky” Wills, were elected to serve a three-year term of the Friendship Shelter at the January board of directors meeting.

Hanauer is the owner of Laguna Beach Books, an independent bookstore at the Old Pottery Place. She and her husband, Joe, have been Renaissance Club and Key Club members at Friendship Shelter for several years, providing funds that help to sustain core programs.

Wills was born in Oregon, and obtained her nursing degree from Chapman College.

She joined Friendship Shelter in January 2008 as the volunteer nurse/health-care coordinator.

She and her husband, Eric, live in Laguna Beach with their three children.

Kelly Boyd to be honored by Woman’s Club

Former Laguna Beach Mayor Kelly Boyd will be honored by the Woman’s Club and the community at a lunch Feb. 5 at the club, 286 St. Ann’s Drive.

“Our community asks a great deal of our mayors,” said club President Gayle Waite.

“This lunch recognizes Mayor Boyd’s term of service. It will allows all of us to show our appreciation and affection for Kelly,” Waite added.

The cost is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers.

To confirm a reservation, mail a check to Woman’s Club, 286 St. Ann’s, Laguna Beach, CA. 92651. Seating is limited, and no tickets will be sold at the door. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.
