COSTA MESA — Bridgette Reyes scored a game-high 18 points, and also had nine rebounds, five assists and two steals for the No. 4-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Diana Neves added 17 points, Molly Pfohl had 14 points and Rachel Copeland contributed 13 points for Vanguard (13-2, 9-2 in conference). Sarah Boyd had 10 points, 12 assists and five steals for the Lions, who led 41-25 at halftime.

IRVINE — Mikah Maly-Karros had a game-high 28 points and 14 rebounds in 28 minutes of action for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Maly-Karros has nine double-doubles to lead the Big West. Guards Jade Smith-Williams and Rebecca Maessen each added 14 points in the win, with Smith-Williams totaling a game-high four steals and nine assists, which ties her career-high for UCI (8-14, 5-5 in conference).

COSTA MESA — The Mustangs’ Dean Hadley, who scored a game-high 16 points, drained two free throws with one second left in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Tremayne Gipson scored 14 points to lead the Lions (4-13, 3-8 in conference). Alex Chapman had 14 points and Greg Scott added 12 points for the Lions.

The Master’s improved to 14-7, 7-4.

BASEBALL

COSTA MESA — Designated hitter Eric Krzysiak had four hits, five RBIs and three runs for the Lions to open the season with two nonconference wins Saturday.

Krzysiak went three for three in the first game, when center fielder Brandon Young went two for three with three RBIs. Right fielder Zachary Leighton went three for five with three RBIs and two runs in the first game. Catcher Kip Masuda went two for three with two RBIs and two runs in the second game for Vanguard (2-0).

Pitcher Adrian Mendoza, who struck out four and allowed four hits and no runs in five innings, won the first game.

Pitcher Brandon Godfrey struck out 12, allowing two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win in the second game.

SOFTBALL

CMS 5, Vanguard 3

CMS 7, Vanguard 6

COSTA MESA — Center fielder Kari Bergerson had four hits and two runs in the two games for the Lions in a nonconference doubleheader against Claremont Mudd-Scripps to open the season Saturday.

First baseman/designated player Elizabeth Archer went three for four with one RBI and one run in the second game for Vanguard (0-2), while shortstop Kimberly Skoglund was two for three with two runs in the first game.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 5,

San Diego State 2

SAN DIEGO — Kristina Smith, Courtney Brown, Brooke Bartlett, April Bisharat and Stephanie Hammel each won in singles for the Anteaters in the nonconference match Saturday.

Hammel defeated Julia Trunk, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 singles to help UCI improve to 1-1.

Mini-tournament

IRVINE — The No. 9-ranked Anteaters split their two matches Saturday.

Junior Caitlin Haskell scored a career-high six goals to lead UCI (1-1) to a 17-11 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in the Anteaters’ season-opener.

Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Vickers, a Newport Harbor High product, had five saves for UCI in its 13-3 loss to No. 10-ranked Arizona State.

The Sun Devils went 3-0 in the tournament.

TRACK AND FIELD

Washington Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. — UC Irvine’s Alisha Misiaita finished second in the shot put with mark of 49 feet, 11 3/4 inches Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Stadium.

Misiaita’s mark is a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships at Fayetteville, Ark., in March.

Idaho’s Mykael Bothum won the shot put Saturday with a mark of 51-4 1/2 .

UCI’s Lauren Collins placed fourth in the high jump at 5-5 3/4 . Kelsi Sando of UCI was 14th at 5-1 3/4 and Christina Sando 16th at 4-11 3/4 .

Freshman Vanessa Houston finished sixth in the 200 meters (25.21 seconds) and seventh in the 60 meters (7.69).

Another freshman, Sakia Sailinuu was 17th in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 18.21 seconds.

Golde Ibia placed 20th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.09 and Amber Middleton was 26th in 9.26

Natasha Wardley was 25th in the long jump at 16-10 3/4 and Madeline Leduc placed 25th in the triple jump at 36-2 1/4 .

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Riverside 5, Vanguard 2

RIVERSIDE — Lukas Pereira won in singles for the Lions in their season opener Saturday.

Pereira defeated John Park, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Hawaii def. UC Irvine

HONOLULU — Carson Clark had a career-high 29 kills for No. 7-ranked UCI, which lost, 30-28, 30-20, 27-30, 26-30, 20-18, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday night.

The Anteaters (5-5, 1-4 in conference) had match-point four times in the fifth game, but No. 9-ranked Hawaii battled back to win the final set.

Outside hitter Jordan DuFault had a double-double with 19 kills and a team- and season-high 12 digs. Setter Anthony Spittle recorded 58 assists and a career-high 11 digs.

The teams played again late Saturday night.
