School preps for fundraiser

Dr. Ralph E. Hawes Elementary School is preparing for its biggest fundraiser of the year, and this spring the event is even more important, with direct donations down and the Parent Teacher Organization taking over the funding for the school’s music teacher.

The PTA is looking for donations to auction off at its annual Spring Fling and Auction to raise money for field trips, art programs, playground equipment and classroom supplies. The PTO will have to start making cuts to technology, art programs and special programs if it doesn’t make up the difference in the lost direct donations, said Executive Vice President Kathy Novelli.

“We desperately need to raise money to provide the supplies and programs our children need for a comprehensive education,” Novelli said in an e-mail.

The school is looking for donations from businesses of “everything and anything,” from small items that can be put in baskets to big ticket items and gift certificates, Novelli said.

The Rockin’ Spring Fling will be March 13, and the school is expecting more than 300 people.
