Edison still cruising

HUNTINGTON BEACH — If junior standout Bonnie Samuelson is knocking down shots, the Edison High girls’ basketball team is formidable.

If sophomores Rilee Horton and Lauren Grego are doing it, too, then the Chargers can appear nearly unstoppable. That’s the way it was Tuesday night at Edison High, as they took a 63-39 Sunset League victory over Marina.

“We’ve been working on running the floor and we did a good job of that tonight,” Edison Coach Dan Wiley said. “We’re so young, but everybody’s getting better and better. We’re improving every game.”

Bonnie Samuelson scored 32, including 15-of-16 from the free-throw line. But Grego’s 11 points in the first half, as well as Horton’s eight in the second half, also helped the Chargers (17-4, 7-0). Freshman guard Karlie Samuelson added eight for Edison, which has won 11 straight games.

“We’re a lot younger this year, for sure,” said Bonnie Samuelson, who helped lead last year’s team to the CIF finals.

“The thing is, we have really good chemistry on this team. We all get along really well. Lauren and Rilee shot well tonight, and Karlie and Christina [Marquette] pushed the ball great.”

Edison is ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA poll.

Junior center Sloan Turner had 16 points and 14 rebounds for Marina (11-13, 4-3). Senior guard Renee Lindquist scored eight.

Vikings Coach Butch Fredlow said with a possible second-place finish in league, his team is looking at hosting a first-round CIF playoff game.

“When [Edison] runs that half-court trap and puts both Samuelsons at the top, it’s hard to get though that,” Fredlow said.

Huntington Beach 78, Trabuco Hills 22: Senior center Meghan White scored a career-high 29 points and added 13 rebounds for the Oilers in the easy Sea View League win Tuesday.

Kelsey Minato scored 15 and Maya Kennedy had 10 for Huntington (18-5, 6-1 in league), ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division II-AA.

Los Alamitos 46, Fountain Valley 44: Caitlyn Ducat scored a team-high 16 but the Barons (10-12, 2-5) were edged Tuesday night.

Segerstrom 62, Ocean View 55: The Seahawks made it closer than the first time around but Segerstrom likely clinched an outright Golden West League title Tuesday at Segerstrom.

Kelli Berry scored 16 and Vanessa Cardoza had 12 for Ocean View (5-2 in league). Segerstrom is 7-0 in league.
