NEWPORT COAST — Mark Shapiro scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Lightning in the Academy League game Friday night.

Mark Loper, who scored 15 points, hit two free throws in a one-and-one situation at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime with a 59-59 tie. Sage Hill Coach Jeff Beeler said Loper was fouled on the dribble just outside the three-point line as time expired in regulation.

Kevin Schaefer, who had 16 points, drained two three-pointers to open the overtime period.

Connor Gaughan contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds for Sage Hill (16-5, 6-2 in league).

The Lightning play at Brethren Christian Tuesday at 6 p.m.

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Austin Bagby led the host Sailors with 13 points in the Sunset League game Friday.

The loss drops the Tars to 11-13, 3-5 in league with two league games remaining.

CERRITOS — Maddie Culberson celebrated her 16th birthday with a hat trick for the Lightning in the Academy League match Friday.

Culberson has scored 13 goals this season. She scored in the 11th minute on an assist from Noosha Deravi. Her second goal came in the 25th minute, when Alexa Thomas assisted. Molly Vorwerck assisted Culberson’s third goal in the 50th minute.

Francesca D’Agistino scored an unassisted goal in the 70th minute and Megan Culberson capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Goalie Hannah MacLeod had two saves in her shutout.

Sage Hill (9-7-2, 6-2 in league) plays host to Brethren Christian Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

NEWPORT COAST — Maggie Danner hit three free throws in the final minute for the margin of victory in the Academy League game Friday at Sage Hill.

Hannah Jeffrey had 15 rebounds and eight points for the winners (9-9, 4-4 in league), while Ava Soleimany chipped in 11 points.

Whitney is 3-5 in league.
