Newport advances to semis

IRVINE — Newport Harbor High and Dos Pueblos of Goleta appear on course to meet for the third time this season in a girls’ water polo tournament championship match.

The Sailors defeated Santa Barbara, 8-5, in the quarterfinals of the Irvine Southern California Championships at Irvine High Friday. Newport Harbor (20-3) will play against Sunset League foe Los Alamitos in a semifinal today at 11 a.m. Dos Pueblos (24-0), which won the Holiday Cup and Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions by beating the Tars in those title matches, will play in its semifinal at 10 a.m. against Edison, which upset Corona del Mar, 8-4, in the quarterfinals at the Sea Kings’ pool.

Kaleigh Gilchrist, Katie Jackson and Madison McLaren scored two goals each for Newport Harbor against Santa Barbara. Colleen McCall contributed three assists and two steals, while Kate Klippert added two steals, one goal and one assist.

Goalie Krissy Burger recorded six saves.

Today’s championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the third-place game is at 2 p.m. at Irvine High.

Victoria Kent led the Sea Kings (16-7) with two goals. She also had one steal. Claire Eadington had two assists, two steals and one goal, while Cassidy Papa finished with a goal, one assist and one steal.

Goalie Alex Musselman recorded six saves.

CdM will play against Long Beach Wilson in a fifth-place semifinal match at 8 a.m. at Irvine High.

If the Sea Kings win, they’ll play at 1 p.m.
