The Political Landscape:

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck lauded Assemblyman Chuck DeVore as the “Tea Party favorite” in the California Senate race during a buddy-buddy chat on Fox News this week.

Beck and DeVore took turns blaming the American progressive movement for much of the nation’s political problems during the sit-down interview.

“[Progressivism] is the disease because it’s anti-constitutional,” DeVore said. “They saw the Constitution as a roadblock to their grand designs to bigger government, and they set about to dismantle it….”

This seemed to please Beck.

“You intrigue me because I’m looking for people who understand the Constitution and understand the progressive movement,” Beck told DeVore.

All told, it’s been a pretty good couple of weeks for DeVore.

On Sunday, Pulitzer-winning political columnist George Will wagered that DeVore would beat former Hewlett-Packard executive Carly Fiorina and political veteran Tom Campbell in the June Republican primary.

DeVore also got lots of media attention for his lampooning of a Fiorina ad attacking Campbell that featured a man wearing a sheep mask with glowing red eyes.

DeVore answered by creating a group called the “Society for the Eradication of Demon Sheep from our Political Discourse.” A tongue-in-cheek Internet campaign ad he made on the demon sheep quickly went viral.

Fairgrounds sale

The board members of the Orange County Fairgrounds have yet to state their formal position on the sale of the 150-acre property, despite pleas from many in the public to do so.

The fair board members canceled two consecutive scheduled meetings because of a “lack of quorum.”

During last month’s meeting, members of the public and the Orange County Preservation Society demanded that the board state its opinion on the sale.

All the fair board’s members, except David Padilla and Joyce Tucker, refused to authorize a discussion on the matter. But in January the board agreed to move up its next meeting from Feb. 25 to Feb. 2 to discuss the sale of the fairgrounds and give its position.

However, the Feb. 2 meeting was canceled for a lack of quorum and rescheduled for Tuesday. But that meeting also was canceled. Now the board will meet Feb. 25.

Asked if the board would finally discuss its position on the sale at the meeting as promised, board Chairwoman Kristina Dodge said, “Why is that relevant whether we are for or against the sale?”

Dodge would not give her position on the sale despite repeated questions.

“I’m for whatever the governor wants to do,” she said, but would not say whether that means she is in favor of the sale.

Members from the preservation society were planning to give the board a “let them eat it” cake Feb. 2.

Now that they canceled the meeting, the cake has rotted. But they’ll still be getting it Feb. 25 because it’s “apropos for this board,” said Brian Lochrie, spokesman for the preservation society.
