Eagles earn crown

COSTA MESA — The Estancia High boys’ soccer team knew the task at hand before taking on crosstown rival Costa Mesa Wednesday. A win would bring the Eagles their fourth straight league title. A tie would do no good.

They were nervous, but they were passionate, Estancia Coach Robert Castellano said. Now, they are Orange Coast League champions.

Carlos Moreno and Juan Vences scored a goal each in the Eagles’ 2-0 win at Jim Scott Stadium. Estancia (13-8-3, 6-2 in league) surpassed Calvary Chapel (5-1-2 in league) for the OCL title.

“It was a little nerve-racking because we knew had to win,” Castellano said. “Costa Mesa gave us some trouble because they had a different alignment than last time. But we wanted that win real bad. We were hungry.”

Alan Anaya assisted on Moreno’s goal in the 15th minute and Ricardo Esquivel assisted Vences in the 60th. Christian Montillo and Earvin Bajena stood out as defenders, Castellano said. Goalie Edgar Vega had six saves.
