Stanley Jay Schiller

Stanley Jay Schiller died peacefully, of

natural causes, on the evening of January

22 at Mission Hospital. He was 85. His

loving wife, Thelma, as well as all 5 of his

sons were by his side. Remarkably, he fought

just long enough to be able to see two sons

who traveled from New Jersey and Hawaii

on the afternoon of January 22. Stan, above

everything, loved his family. He was a devoted

father to his 5 sons and devoted husband to

his wife, Thelma. Their 40-year anniversary

was just days earlier. Stan was born in

Chicago on September 9, 1924 to Florence and Judge Jay Schiller who

would often have young Stan sit by his side while he adjudicated. Later,

Stan graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, class of ’47, along with

Jimmy Carter. Stan was proud captain of Senn High School’s swim team

and later swam competitively at Annapolis. He had a gift for writing and

public speaking and had at one time planned to be a journalist, but his

career took him in other directions including hospital construction and

hotel chain ownership. His passions included the stock market, reading,

golf and tennis as well as playing duplicated bridge with Thelma. He

was a Life Master bridge player several times over and continued to win

bridge tournaments with his partner Thelma, well into his 80s. In fact,

after reaching retirement age, he remained active by teaching bridge for

20 years. His quick wit and unflagging sense of humor endeared Stan

to everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed especially by his

family. He is survived by his wife, Thelma, his brother Jay, his 5 sons Jay

B, Harry, Dan, Stan Jr., Tom, and their families. Interment of his ashes

will take place at the Annapolis Columbarium. In lieu of fl owers, the

family requests that donations in Stan’s name be made to the American

Red Cross International Haiti Relief Fund.
