COSTA MESA — The host Lions swept the nonconference doubleheader Saturday, improving to 6-0 this season.

Strong starting pitching was a theme for Vanguard, as Jason Dovel allowed one hit and no earned runs in six innings of the opener. Brandon Godfrey worked five shutout innings in Game 2, allowing four hits. Godfrey is 2-0 this season.

Robert Purpura pitched 1 2/3 innings to earn the save in Game 2.

Kip Masuda had three hits and three runs batted in in both games, while Tyson Leighton had three hits and two RBIs for the winners.

Patten is 1-8.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Stanford def. UC Irvine

PALO ALTO — Carson Clark had 28 kills for the No. 11-ranked Anteaters, as the No. 5-ranked Cardinal won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match, 30-25, 21-30, 30-28, 30-26, Saturday.

Jordan DuFault had 15 kills and Cory Yoder had 10, while Anthony Spittle had 53 assists for UCI (7-8, 3-7 in conference). Spittle and DuFault had 13 digs each.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3

IRVINE — Brooke Bartlett and Kristina Smith earned victories in singles and doubles to help the host Anteaters win the Big West Conference opener Saturday.

Bartlett topped Diane Filip, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5, at No 4 singles, then teamed with Smith to win at No. 3 doubles.

Smith posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

UCI’s Courtney Byron and Becka Kwan won at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

UCI is 3-2.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 9,

UC San Diego 8

IRVINE — Senior Kat Plummer had four goals to pace the host Anteaters in the nonconference game Saturday.

Trucy Chancellor added two goals for UCI (5-3), which received six saves from Morgan Vickers, a Newport Harbor High product.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Davis 74, UC Irvine 71

DAVIS — Mikah Maly-Karros led all players with 34 points and 15 rebounds for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday night.

Maly-Karros shot 11 for 20 from the field and hit 12 of her 14 free-throw attempts. Jade Smith-Williams had 10 points and nine assists for UCI (8-17, 5-7 in conference).

Heidi Heintz led the Aggies (16-8, 8-3) with 21 points.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

NAU Indoor Invitational

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — UC Irvine’s Alisha Misiaita was third in the shot put and Lauren Collins was fourth in the high jump Saturday.

Misiaita’s mark was 49 feet, 2 1/2 inches, while Collins cleared 5-8 3/4 .

Memorial Invitational

WHITTIER — Benny Santa Maria shot two-under-par 70 to help Orange Coast win the 14-team tournament Friday at California Country Club.

Santa Maria finished second individually. Ryan Knapp and Tyler Paul both shot 71 and finished tied for fourth for OCC, which scored 366.

Joe Doody shot 76 and Kord Tagley carded a 78. Canyons came in second with 368 and Ventura was third at 371.

Vanguard 9, Chaminade 6

WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Center fielder Kari Bergerson, second baseman April Glenn and outfielder/catcher Amanda Young had two hits each to help the Lions split the nonconference doubleheader Friday.

Vanguard first baseman Stephanie Leisenring and shortstop Kimberly Skoglund had two runs batted in each in the victory. Pitcher Katharine Jablonski earned the win after striking out four in four innings. She allowed eight hits and four runs.
