IRVINE — Outside hitters Jordan DuFault and Cory Yoder each recorded 17 kills as the No. 11-ranked UC Irvine men’s volleyball team upset No. 1 Cal State Northridge, 30-23, 16-30, 30-21, 30-25 at the Bren Events Center Wednesday.

The Anteaters improved to 8-8, 4-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Matadors dropped to 11-3, 8-3.

DuFault and Yoder each had 10 digs to go with their team-high 17 kills, which was a season-high for Yoder. Opposite Carson Clark had 11 kills and nine digs, while middle blocker Austin D’Amore totaled six kills and a match- and season-high seven block assists. Middle blocker Kevin Wynne hit .600, had five digs, three blocks and three aces, while brother Ian Wynne tallied 27 assists, six digs and two aces. Libero Kevin Welch, a former Corona del Mar High and Orange Coast College standout, had a team-high 11 digs.

Theo Edwards led the Matadors with 17 kills.

RIVERSIDE — The Anteaters fell into a last-place tie with the Highlanders, who have now swept UCI in two Big West Conference games after Wednesday’s home triumph.

Sophomore Eric Wise had 22 points and five rebounds, while junior Darren Moore added 10 points and a career-high-tying nine rebounds for the Anteaters (11-16, 4-9 in conference).

UCI lost the rebounding battle, 47-31 and shot 37.7% from the field.

Riverside is 10-15, 4-9.

COSTA MESA — Brad Hemmerling had 19 kills to pace the host Pirates’ 30-24, 29-31, 30-21, 30-22 nonconference victory Wednesday.

Harrison Carroll had 15 kills and Jeff Patton chipped in 10 for OCC (4-0).

Paul Leon had 42 assists for the Pirates.

Santa Barbara fell to 5-1.

COSTA MESA — Designated hitter Kip Masuda went one for three with one run and two runs batted in for the Lions in the nonconference game Wednesday.

Third baseman Keegan Freeman, catcher Eric Krzysiak, right fielder Jacob Domingos and second baseman Brandon Pesante had one hit each for Vanguard (6-1).

Starter Javier Perez allowed nine hits and three runs in five innings. He struck out five and walked none. Adrian Mendoza pitched four scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out one for the Lions.
